Corcovado

or more popularly known as 'Christ the Redeemer'...

Glory of being counted among seven new wonders of the world would just add to the immortality of the peak of corcovado. The statue atop this peak has been symbolical represnetation of Brazil for a long time.

The peak has been trekking destination for the kings (Peter and Peter - II) and that certainly would have evoked curiosity among teh local gentry. The king had ordered to build a railway track for mass to reach to the peak way back in 1885. This peak also boasts of the first electric track of brazil in the first decade of Twentieth Century. Among the esteemed visitors, this place can count Dumont (the local hero who built first aircraft), the Pope, Einstein etc. The statue of Christ was erected here in the 30s.

The best part of the visit to corcovado still is the train ride form the ground to the peak. It takes the route through the woods and presents a wonderful site to the visitors. Enroute to the peak, a group of Smba singers get onto the train and there would be song and dance, which pulls in some of the visitors too. ladies would leave their seats let their feet do the tapping.

From Christ the Redeemer

I went to this place twice during my stay in Rio. During my very fiorst weekend, I found the company of clouds, which made the vision hazy so much so that i could not even see status clearly. However the wet touch of cloud and the feeling of being among them was exhilerating.

HOwever the lack of clarity on first visit pulled me to this place once again and this time I had a bright sunny day to get clear view of the statue and the landscape around.

From top of the peak, I could easily see Marakhana (the famous stadium, where Rio olympics 2016 is to be inaugurated), Sugar Loaf, Beaches, Jardem de Allah, Great Lake etc and the whole of the city or Rio and Niteroi.
