Finally, India has it. Any country worth its salt and having participated in war, has a war memorial to remember its braves.
There are multiple war memorials in many countries. I saw in US, the memorial they have created for Korea war and other wars, apart from museums dedicated to its forces.
I could never understand why India never had one. We have participated in multiple wars ad our soldiers have fought like tigers. Even in the war we lost (1962, against China), the valor of our men in uniform was unmatched. It takes guts to stand in front of machine guns with mere 303 in hands. In other wars like 1948, 1965, 1971 and Kargil, we have won handsomely. India also holds the world record of being on the winning side of the biggest surrender since WWII.
In spite of all these, India never had a single war memorial. Surprising or shocking, I cant say!
We have our cities and towns filled with statues of our heroes, mostly political. But why is it that not a single memorial was erected to remember our war heroes. Could it be due to the approach taken since independence, when a corrupt defense minister was preferred over an honest officer?
Our political system has always seen military with suspicion. From Nehru to Indira to Manmohan Singh, political leadership had always found military as a challenge to their hegemony - in spite of our army being one of the most disciplined army. Could this be the reason why military was never given its due. Even OROp took more than 25 years to see the light of day,.
Thankfully now, the time is changing and we have a memorial in Delhi. One more reason to visit the capital.
